"Dwhite - Powered by Caffeine, Daft Punk, and Corgis" (Dwhite95)

This STI is an amazing find, for me at least everything is right about it. The color combo, the era, and it has low miles, and not Subaru low miles, but actual low miles, like 15,000 low. Now you know what that means, a high price. $29,900 to be exact. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
Makes you think, what else could you get for around 30k. Todays competitor is an all around classic. The 1979 Porsche 911SC, with a wing to make it look like a turbo. Its a cool grey and has around 80,000 miles on it. And the interior? Classically German. It sits at a very convenient price of $29,900. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
So which is your choice?

But then, I wouldn't pay anywhere near $30k for that STi

If money is a major factor, the STi will be cheaper in the long run.

Ugh the logical part of my brain says you could be close enough to get a new STI at that price.
The "I bought a 04 WRX Wagon with 96k on it for 7000 and spent a lot more fixing little things" part of me says do the STI and don't look back.
Or buy the 911 because it says hey, "I go to Gala's, sip my martinis dirty, and make your wife wish you were as interesting as I am- read: I once parallel parked a train"
Sorry that wasn't helpful...i wish i had both

Nada value for the STi is still only $16k with those miles. It would maybe be worth it around $20k
Porsche.

911. Why would I pay that much for an old STi when I can get a new one for a little more?
I'll take 911 RS for $5000

The Porsche seems a bit overpriced (maybe $4-5000). Also, those aren't the correct wheels. So I'd buy none, and instead buy a less expensive 911 (SC or G50 trans).

It depends. Do you live anywhere with snow? Then get the STI.
If you can drive something else for 9 months/yr, get the 911, hands down. They're dead-nuts reliable and has a sense of sophistication that the STI can't even come close to

Agreed,
If the Subaru has over 100K miles, or has been hooned...
scratch that... it has been hooned.
It may start needing more and more maintenance attention.
A Porsche that is well kept, may need less frequent maintenance... albeit perhaps more expensive at the point of sale.

I'm a Porsche fanboy, and seeing as how I've never driven a 911 or an sti I would say the 911. But damn if something goes wrong on that 911 it will be expensive.

I wonder why a WRX STI was purchased, and not used. It isn't exactly an aesthetic artwork...
The Porsche looks good, but a bit modified..
The 930-esque whale tail is part of it... but the later 964 wheels also. And the chrome door window trims, while the rest of the window trim is black... the door might not be original... and if it was damaged, I would look for other chassis damage that may have been repaired. (side impact suspect)
911SC isn't bad, even with 80K miles... but 30K for just a 'regular' model, with some fettling and questions... seems too high. It doesn't appear to be a special model, or a 930 Turbo.
Both cars seem a bit over-priced.
15-20K seems more appropriate to me... but used car prices are wacky, and I may not be completely up to date with used-car inflation.
But 30K should buy an average-mile 2-3 year old depreciated WRX STI, or a pretty decent 996, 964, or a fair to needs-attention 993 Carrera 2.

I'd probably go with the 911... but maybe at 60% of that asking price...
It would immediately get euro-style covered headlights, classic wheels, (Fuchs, Campagnolos, ATS, something old-school.)
I would probably either re-black the door window frames, or backdate the rest of the car to chrome-era classic fittings.... and either a smaller, less conspicuous whale-tail, or an RS-like Duck tail spoiler, a pre-74 rear bumper, and an RS or IROC style front bumper cover.
It is old enough to be a classic... it should look the part, and while newer Porsche wheels (16-17" diameter) is nice, those 964-style wheels are kind of boring, and the bright silver paint doesn't look great with the seal grey paint.

The thing is...
A 10 year old STI, even with low miles, is a much more complex machine... maybe not in terms of build quality... but in terms of number of moving parts.
The 911 is RWD and air-cooled, maybe carbureted or K-Jetronic fuel-injected, and was a premium well-built car from stem to stern.
The STI is AWD, turbocharged, liquid cooled, and multiple-computer controlled, built in the shell of an economy car... and it has been sitting without being used (and maintenance is usually considered by mileage, not by time passing)

old 911's are very robust and simple, and parts are not too bad. Just labor intensive.

I own an STi.
I have a undying love affair for 911s. That being said. If you want an car, with soul, personality and character. 911. All day, every day. Even on Christmas.
Then again - I would choose the 996 C4S (so I can drive it all year around, especially in Ottawa, where I live.)
The STi if you need one car to drive all year around (unless you're Larry Kosilla.. then drive the 911 all year around, zero fucks given.). I
would not
buy an STi used, unless I knew the owner and how they drove it.

I don't know what sti part prices run, but I have a poor man's porsche, a 944 and part prices are atrocious. 800 for a clutch kit. 500 for 2 motor mounts. I would still take the porsche any day of the week, but a Porsche is a mean and expensive mistress

My knowledge of Porsche so far starts with the 924, and ends with the 944, how labor intensive would it be compared to a 944? I own one, and worked on it extensively, but I haven't even been a passenger in any 911

It is a premium well built car, but unless you work on it yourself, it will be a very expensive one. Personally I would take the Porsche any day of the week, I can't really speak for the STi because, I've never worked on one and don't know anything about them to be honest. But yeah, a turbocharged car that has sat for a while? Expect some serious time getting it back up to speed. No pun intended (hah)

True, but we're not talking about a Ferrari that needs valve adjustments every 3k miles. Even if a clutch replacement costs twice as much as on an STi, it's not like you are replacing the clutch more frequently on the Porsche than the Subaru - and if you are, then you're probably enjoying the Porsche quite a bit more. :)
